Sikkim, as a region, has always had diverse cultures, mythology, and folklores embedded into vibrant daily lives. Its traditional farming methods and organic commitment has provided us with abundance for generations.

Summer’s gone; been quite some time. Autumn will leave soon too. Life, if you think, is quite magical if you pause and observe.
Everything moves at its own pace, doing what it must.
We’ve always been told to finish things before the time passes.
Have you ever sat down to watch the time pass?
It certainly never does.

For us, harvest has always meant celebration. Nothing about it is rushed, there’s always room for spontaneity. To someone from outside, it might look like tedious work, but within the community it’s something we look forward to. It feels more like play, where everyone comes together and takes part in something bigger than themselves.
During the breaks, the women sit down and start singing. The songs are about life, its struggles, and the quiet acceptance that follows. Most of the time, the singing is impromptu, with one voice joining another until it becomes something shared.

Once thriving in Sikkim, large cardamom now faces decline despite its GI recognition. Changing times and shifting livelihoods have slowly reduced its presence in our fields. Yet, this crop remains woven into our culture, our stories, and our identity. Though our part is modest, it helps carry forward the tradition of growing cardamom.

The dhiki, a wooden grain grinder, was once an essential part of nearly every rural household. Used for processing rice, millet, and other staples, it embodied the values of self-sufficiency and collective effort within families.

The dhiki is slowly disappearing, with only a few families still using it today. In those households, it has also taken on the role of a communal space, where people gather to use it, exchange news, share stories, and gossip. Over time, this indigenous tool evolved into more than just a machine for grinding grain; it became a social space that brought the community together.

Sikkim, out of the many names it is known by, is most popularly called Beyul Demajong - the Hidden Valley of Rice.

In Tibetan mythology, Beyuls were sanctuaries for people during troubled times. Watched over by Kanchenjunga and mighty deities, it is said that to the pure of heart, Sikkim reveals itself not just as mountains and valleys, but as a hidden paradise.

For centuries, indigenous varieties have been carefully preserved, their seeds saved each season like sacred heirlooms. Each year, the cycle begins anew: the seeds are sown, the earth is tilled, fields are flooded, and young shoots are planted in the waterlogged soil. Slowly, the plants ripen and turn golden-brown, ready for harvest. Then comes the threshing, when grain is separated by hand, the same way our ancestors did.

Growing rice is a communal effort, with families and neighbors taking turns to work on one another’s land. The rice we grow and consume today connects us directly to the lives of those who came before us, through their patience, their prayers, and their labor.

It is sacred, a reminder that life moves in cycles, and that community lies at the heart of it. Always.
